From the early 13th. century glass production has been centred on the Island of Murano in Venice, and its fame has spread world-wide. Venetian glass has attained a pre-eminence, and has excited admiration and emulation for centuries. There are numerous glass workers remaining on the island, now mostly catering to the tourist trade.
