Sweden has been known for its fine glass objects since the 18th Century when the great Swedish glass factories Orrefors and Kosta Boda were founded. In the 20th Century, glass was second only to ceramics as a medium of expression for the great Swedish designers that pioneered the Swedish modern design movement. Ekenas Glass was founded by R Stähl & Hjalmar Stähl (both from Orrefors) in 1917. Its designers included Tage Larsson (1930), Hildur Haggård (1936), Greta Runeborg-Tell (1939-50s), Astrid Rietz (1945), Edvin Ollers (1940-47), John Orwar Lake (1953-76), Michael Bang (1960s). The company was directed from 1922 by Sven Westberg until his death in 1962. The company went out of business in 1976. Despite its relatively short existence, the Company’s influence on design and colour world-wide was extraordinary, and is still studied by contemporary glass-makers and designers.
